Located in Mayport, Florida overlooking the St. Johns River and the Atlantic Ocean, Naval Station Mayport is the 3rd largest naval base in the US, covering more than 3,000 acres. The naval base was opened in 1942, and features a busy harbor that accommodates up to 34 ships and a large runway that can accommodate all sizes of US military aircraft. Naval Station Mayport Tours. Naval Station Mayport is not open to the general public for tours, however the base does host periodic special events for the public. Navy-affiliated youth and student groups, like NJROTC units, Sea Cadets and Navy reunions, are encouraged to tour the naval base on Thursdays and Fridays, based on ship availability.
