Fort Clinch State Park. Opened as a state park in 1935, Fort Clinch is a well-preserved example of 19th century U.S. military forts, hosting military troops from 1847 until 1898. No battles were fought at Fort Clinch, but the site was used as the base of Union operations in the area throughout the Civil War and was placed on caretaker status until it was abandoned after the Spanish-American war. Today, the fort is open to the public, offering daily tours and a variety of actors portraying daily life as it was at the time the fort was in use.
